Alaina’s journey in water resources engineering began with a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Vermont in 1993, but it was her passion for skiing that led her west to Colorado. There she was fortunate to launch her professional career in the mountain town of Breckenridge. What started as a pursuit of powder turned into decades of diverse experience across the American West and beyond.
While based in Colorado, she spent years collecting hydrographic data on rivers and streams throughout Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, California, and Nebraska. This hands-on field experience became the foundation for her expertise in technical hydraulic modeling, giving her an intimate understanding of how water behaves in vastly different environments—from high-alpine watersheds to desert arroyos. She also gained valuable experience in civil development, working on grading and drainage design, neighborhood layouts, and water and sewer infrastructure.
Recognizing the need to deepen her technical knowledge, she pursued a Master of Science in Civil Engineering with a specialization in water resources from the University of New Hampshire. After completing her graduate studies, she returned to Colorado, where her career took an exciting turn when a major hydropower project brought her to Alaska for four years. Working in Alaska was an adventure that expanded her expertise to include large-scale infrastructure in extreme environments, and arctic hydrology and hydraulics on vast scales.
Today, she is based in western New York (Go Bills!). After three decades in the corporate world, she founded her own consulting practice driven by a simple but powerful belief: when clients truly understand their water resource challenges and the proposed solutions, everyone benefits in the long run. Corporate constraints often limit the time available for thorough client education, but as an independent consultant, she can dedicate whatever time is necessary to ensure her clients are informed partners in every project decision.
This educational approach, combined with 30 years of field experience across diverse climates and water systems, allows her to deliver not just engineering solutions, but the knowledge and understanding that leads to better long-term outcomes for communities, property owners, and the environment.
